Shopify Launches Canvas, an AI-Powered Store Builder Powered by Sidekick
Shopify has introduced Canvas, a conversational workspace that lets merchants design and customize their entire online storefront in real time by chatting with its AI assistant, Sidekick.
Conversational Store Creation Comes to Shopify
Shopify introduced Canvas on Thursday, a new site-building tool that allows merchants to assemble and refine their e-commerce storefronts by chatting directly with an AI assistant. The feature builds on Shopify’s existing AI agent, Sidekick, bringing conversational generation into an interactive, visual design environment.
Previously, merchants using Shopify’s no-code builder had to manually rearrange predefined blocks and sections, relying on custom code or external web developers whenever they needed deeper modifications. With Canvas, store owners can instead describe their design intent, layouts, or branding preferences in plain language to generate storefronts automatically.
Real-Time Code Rendering and Visual Synchronization
Unlike conventional AI page generators that output static design mockups, Canvas renders the store’s actual production code as Sidekick applies updates. This live execution enables merchants to test site navigation, responsive behavior across mobile and desktop viewports, and custom animations directly on the canvas. Users can pan and zoom across their entire website layout or focus on isolated components, with the option to click elements manually to apply targeted edits.
To ensure the AI understands the interface it creates, Sidekick takes periodic screenshots of the rendered page, allowing it to see the visual output alongside the merchant. Shopify also updated the underlying theme engine, providing Sidekick with direct file-level access and simplifying the theme architecture so the model can read, interpret, and adjust structure, design, and business logic without breaking site integrity. While Shopify notes that Canvas is in its early stages and will require ongoing improvements, the tool eliminates standard technical barriers for entrepreneurs who lack coding knowledge or the budget to hire design agencies.
The Push Toward Conversational Web Development
Canvas marks Shopify’s entry into a growing wave of conversational and prompt-driven site creation. Established website platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer have steadily integrated AI generation into their visual builders, while newer "vibe-coding" environments like Replit and Lovable have popularized generating full-stack software interfaces using conversational prompts. By integrating file-level AI modifications directly into its e-commerce ecosystem, Shopify aims to transition site setup from manual drag-and-drop assembly to automated, real-time collaboration.
