Shopify Enables Browser-Based AI Agents to Finalize Purchases at Checkout
Shopify has expanded its agentic commerce capabilities, introducing WebMCP tools that allow browser-based AI agents to read, update, and submit checkout orders with user authorization.
Shopify Brings AI Agents Straight to the Checkout Counter
On Monday, September 28, 2026, Shopify announced that browser-based artificial intelligence agents can now complete end-to-end purchases on merchant websites. The expansion enables automated assistants to finalize transactions directly rather than being restricted to browsing inventories and adding products to carts.
The capability is rolling out to all eligible merchants across the platform. Under the new setup, browser-based agents can interact with Shopify’s checkout flow—including its proprietary Shop Pay system—to review terms, update customer information, and submit orders once authorized by the buyer.
WebMCP Tools and the Universal Commerce Protocol
The system relies on WebMCP, an extension of the Model Context Protocol designed specifically for AI agents running client-side inside a shopper's web browser. Shopify already provides a hosted MCP server for server-to-server agent communication; WebMCP adapts that approach to the browser environment. Both mechanisms sit on top of Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which standardizes product searches, cart construction, and order placement.
The update introduces three specialized checkout tools:
get_checkout: Inspects the current state of the checkout window.update_checkout: Modifies transaction details, such as shipping preferences and delivery addresses.complete_checkout: Executes and places the order after receiving explicit authorization from the consumer.
By using dedicated protocol tools rather than taking screenshots or scraping front-end HTML, agents can interact with storefronts reliably. Gil Greenberg, staff product manager for agentic commerce at Shopify, outlined the architecture in a post on X: “If your agent is operating in the buyer’s browser, use WebMCP tools provided on storefront and checkout to efficiently complete order placement, instead of navigating HTML built for humans.” Greenberg noted that these tools provide structured APIs designed through UCP “to ensure accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements.”
Shopify also expanded its ecosystem partnerships alongside the technical rollout. AI agents such as Muse already maintain direct agentic commerce integrations with the company, and Shopify formally announced a partnership with AI agent Instinct on Monday.
Diverging Strategies in Agentic Commerce
Shopify’s move to welcome automated buyers marks a stark contrast to how several other e-commerce giants are treating agentic traffic. Platforms including Amazon and brands such as Adidas have actively moved to block AI agents from executing automated purchases on behalf of users.
While some retailers treat agentic shoppers as bot traffic or potential security vulnerabilities, Shopify’s deployment of formal API standards like WebMCP and UCP positions the company to turn machine-driven browsing into authorized checkout volume.
