Apple has officially unveiled the HomeView, its first dedicated smart home display designed to serve as a central controller, personal assistant, and household hub. Priced at $299, the device is available for preorder and scheduled to begin shipping on November 13.

Announced during Apple's "Welcome Home" event, the HomeView combines dedicated smart home hardware with Siri AI capabilities to bridge personal communication data with household device automation.

Hardware and Interface

The HomeView features a 7-inch square Liquid Retina touchscreen that sits atop a compact aluminum base housing an integrated speaker. Apple is releasing the device in both tabletop and wall-mounted configurations.

On the imaging front, the display includes a 12-megapixel front-facing camera supporting Center Stage for FaceTime video calls, facial recognition, and mirror functionality through the device's Control Center.

The user interface borrows heavily from Apple’s existing ecosystem. Much of the visual design resembles Apple Watch faces, allowing users to swipe through dozens of customizable options. Navigation relies on gesture controls:

  • Swiping left cycles through home faces.
  • Swiping right brings up additional smart home views, such as live camera feeds from HomeKit Secure Video.
  • Swiping up returns users to the main screen or reveals installed applications automatically populated from an iPhone.
  • Swiping down accesses the Control Center.

A dedicated Home Widget face provides walk-up-and-tap control over connected accessories, mirroring functions from the Apple Home app such as adjusting thermostats, activating scenes, or opening garage doors. For secure actions like unlocking door locks, the system requires facial authentication or verification via an iPhone.

Context-Aware Siri AI and Workflow Automation

The core intelligence of the HomeView is powered by Siri AI, which can pull personal context from sources like text messages and calendar appointments to execute chained actions.

In one demonstrated scenario, a user inquired about an incoming visitor's arrival. Siri pulled the flight arrival details from a text message, estimated transit travel time from JFK Airport without checked baggage, and scheduled a connected coffee maker to turn on exactly 15 minutes before the visitor was scheduled to reach the residence. Another voice demo showed Siri finding and playing a Bad Bunny song that had been shared in a user's text thread, retrieving the track in approximately eight seconds.

Beyond conversational routines, the display integrates with Apple’s Handoff feature for household tasks. Users looking at recipes on an iPhone can bring the phone near the display to hand off the content; the HomeView then reformats the recipe—supporting most standard Google formatting—into step-by-step instructions with integrated timers.
