Albertsons Partners with OpenAI to Bring Safeway Grocery Orders and Meal Planning to ChatGPT
Albertsons Companies is expanding its collaboration with OpenAI, allowing shoppers to build Safeway grocery carts directly within ChatGPT while deploying generative AI across its enterprise workflows.
Albertsons Expands OpenAI Partnership Across 2,200 Stores
On October 1, 2026, supermarket giant Albertsons Companies announced an expanded partnership with OpenAI to embed artificial intelligence across its customer-facing services and internal operations. The initiative introduces an interactive Safeway shopping experience directly inside ChatGPT, alongside a wider rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI API integrations across the business.
Albertsons operates more than 2,200 retail locations across the United States—serving over 36 million customers weekly under banners including Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME, and Tom Thumb. The expanded agreement aims to bridge everyday consumer meal planning with digital grocery fulfillment and retail analytics.
Inside the Safeway ChatGPT Integration and Enterprise Rollout
The consumer-facing integration allows ChatGPT users to generate shopping carts using natural language prompts, photos, or digital ingredient lists. Shoppers can enter queries such as "Plan pizza night for four," "Put together a quick dinner from the deli," or "Restock breakfast foods and snacks using store brands." In response, ChatGPT identifies relevant inventory, highlights applicable discounts, builds a cart, and routes the shopper directly to Safeway's digital platform to complete checkout.
“This is another practical way we are using AI to reduce friction and make everyday shopping easier,” said Jill Pavlovich, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Experience at Albertsons Companies.
The functionality builds upon Albertsons' existing Ask AI and AI shopping assistant features. While launching first with Safeway, the company plans to extend the ChatGPT purchasing workflow across its other retail banners, including Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME, Tom Thumb, and Albertsons.
Behind the scenes, Albertsons is deploying ChatGPT Enterprise to select internal units, including software development and retail technology teams, to accelerate workflow iteration and build repeatable operational practices. The retailer is also utilizing the OpenAI API in conjunction with internal predictive models to provide merchants with explainable, data-driven merchandising recommendations and promotional insights.
Consumer Receptivity to AI-Assisted Retail
The grocery sector has emerged as an early testing ground for conversational commerce. According to dunnhumby’s February 2026 United States Consumer Trends Tracker, consumers demonstrate greater willingness to use AI tools for grocery shopping than for other retail purchasing categories.
Albertsons is aiming to capitalize on that consumer shift by connecting conversational interfaces directly to basket-building and recipe formulation. By combining conversational commerce apps with enterprise tools and advertising solutions, the grocer is positioning generative AI as a core operational layer across both store merchandise management and online checkout.
