AI-Planned Route Strands Hiker on Cliff Edge, Prompting Helicopter Rescue

A 16-year-old hiker was airlifted off a steep mountain face near Vancouver after using Anthropic's Claude to find a new route to the summit. Rescuers caution that large language models lack real-world geographic and terrain understanding.

A 16-year-old hiker had to be rescued by helicopter from Crown Mountain near Vancouver after attempting to navigate a path planned with an artificial intelligence chatbot.

Bryce Vincent Gowryluk used Anthropic's Claude to find an alternative route to the summit. Instead of a walkable trail, the route led him directly onto the "Widowmaker Arete," a sheer rock face that requires specialized climbing gear. Gowryluk eventually became stranded on a narrow ledge measuring just five feet wide.

Helicopter Winch Operation

Unable to safely climb up or down, the teenager contacted local police, who alerted the volunteer North Shore Rescue team.

Search and rescue personnel tracked Gowryluk's cellphone signal and dispatched a helicopter to the mountain. Two rescue team members were dropped above his position on the rock face. One rescuer rappelled down to the ledge and guided Gowryluk to an extraction point, where the helicopter crew was able to winch him to safety.

The Limits of LLMs in Real-World Navigation

Following the rescue, Gowryluk stated that he takes responsibility for the incident and does not place the blame entirely on Claude, noting that he also referenced Google Maps and AllTrails while preparing for the hike. However, he confirmed that he will never rely on AI tools for outdoor route planning again.

Paul Markey, a rescue manager involved in the operation, warned against relying on AI chatbots for backcountry travel. Markey emphasized that models like Claude have no actual comprehension of physical terrain or specific geographic locations, underscoring that AI cannot serve as a replacement for outdoor experience and practical judgment.

Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
